Description
In 1987, K. L. Giles and J. Prakesh edited a special volume of the Internutional Review of Cytology entitled “Pollen: Cytology and Development” in which the state of pollen research at that time was described. Since then, sexual reproduction in flowering plants has undergone a surprising series of revolutions. Tremendous progress has been made in understanding self-incompatibility in angiosperms through cloning, sequencing, and localizing both genes and gene products related to this phenomenon (see contributions by Dickinson et al., Singh and Kao, and Trick and Heizmann). This work has also provided evidence of a membrane-bound protein kinase containing an extracellular domain closely homologous to the S-gene that is involved in pollen-pistil incompatibility that also seems to be associated with a more general role of signal transduction in plants (at least in sporophytic self-incompatibility systems). Similar progress has been made in understanding gametophytic gene expression, including both “early” genes, expressed from meiosis to the microspore stage, and a class of “late” genes, typically linked with gametophytic function (see
Mascarenhas, and Davies et ul.).
