The elimination of hunger and malnutrition from society is a key challenge of all agricultural stakeholders around the world. Feeding the global population has never been so challenging, especially in the context of diminishing land and water resources, an ever-increasing global population, and climate change. The only solution may be to develop climate-smart plant varieties that are produced with appropriate agricultural management practices. Today, agriculture is facing an acute shortage of advanced germplasms to replace inferior varieties in farmers’ fields. A “game-changer” strategy for the development of improved germplasm and cultivation practices needs to be implemented quickly and precisely to tackle both current and future adverse environmental conditions.
